I have seen a change in what veterinary specialists consider most important in their professional lives.

After many years of working with multi-specialty practices throughout the United States, I have seen a change in what veterinary specialists consider most important in their professional lives.  This is what I hear when speaking with doctors today.

Personality Fit

This is usually the first thing I hear when I am working with a veterinary specialist who is seeking a new position.  They want an environment where their personality will complement the existing team and make it better.

Team Work

Most specialists want to be part of a team.  They like to confer with their colleagues on cases.  They want an environment where there is an easy flow to communication among departments.  This open communication is extremely important in their professional lives.

Common Philosophy

It is important that specialists and the hospital management team have a common philosophy in regard to patient care and the quality of medicine practiced throughout the hospital.  It is also important that there is common ground as to how staff members are treated.  Otherwise, problems will arise.

Shared Vision

It is also important that the vision for the hospital is communicated to the specialists and that they understand this vision and how it is implemented.  Everyone working together toward a common goal creates a positive energy in the work environment.  People want to come to work and create something together; this is invaluable for professional fulfillment.
