Times change, and as each new generation enters the workforce, they have different expectations and ideals compared to the previous ones.

The same can be said about millennials, who are also known as Generation Y. They are not only well-educated, but they are able to think outside of the box. They grew up with technology, and it’s an integral part of their life. While they are a large and diverse group, making it a mistake to homogenize them, there are a couple of things that most millennials are looking for when considering working in a veterinarian position.

Meaning In Their Jobs

One of the things that virtually all millennials look for in their job is meaning. This also means that when working in a veterinarian position, they expect that the business will give back to society.

Involvement With The Practice

Another factor that is very important to the this generation is their involvement with the practice. Communication is very important, as is the ability to know what choices are being made and why. They also want to have input in these decisions. Millennials don’t just want to feel like another number to the practice; they must be treated like individuals and feel valued within the organization. More so than other generations, they want feedback from their employers about the work that they are doing.

More Flexibility

Unlike the rigid schedules to which previous generations adhered, millennials thrive on more flexibility. Having a better work/life balance is essential to millennials, who are not as motivated by money as other generations. It is also important for millennials to enjoy the work they are doing or they will go elsewhere. Instead of basing their productivity on the amount of hours spent at the workplace, many millennials base it on the completion of their tasks.

Ample Training Opportunities

Millennials grew up with access to information, which is why they are so well-educated. However, this also means that they tend to desire more opportunities for training and improving their knowledge. Because of their reliance on technology, they learn differently and appreciate information that is provided in a quick, concise format. For this reason, technology-driven training is more effective and appreciated by millennials than traditional methods. On the other hand, millennials do appreciate mentoring because it comes with personal attention.

A Team-Oriented Workplace

Because millennials are more eager to have a voice, they also tend to be much more team-oriented. They enjoy connecting with people and tend to prefer seeking input from everyone. This is one of the reasons that a fondness for their bosses and coworkers is one of the motivating factors for millennials at work. It is also why a workplace culture that is compatible with their own is very important to them.

Access To The Latest Technology

Because millennials are so technologically savvy, they prefer working at companies where they know they will have access to technology that is not only up-to-date but will also help to make them more effective at work.
