Our name has changed, but our mission hasn’t. Veterinary Career Services is now LWA Advise, led by Laura Anderson.
Everybody is different, every veterinary specialist is different.
  1. There is no right or wrong, good or bad. Everybody is different, every veterinary specialist is different. Priorities are different, skillsets are different, needs are different – there is no right or wrong. One specialist can thrive in a certain hospital environment where another specialist can struggle. It is about finding that spot where each doctor will grow, will feel part of the team, will feel that energy of their colleagues working toward the same vision with the same values. It’s about igniting their passion and feeling supported. And this is different for everyone.

  2. Veterinary specialists prioritize the commaderie of their team and the support they receive from management. Many times over the years, I have heard doctors say, “I love my colleagues, but our hospital is not well managed. I need to leave and find another hospital where I am supported, where management listens to doctors.” Both are equally important.

  3. Defining expectations at the beginning of any working relationship is of utmost importance. I feel that this is key to a successful partnership. If expectations are not defined and agreed upon at the beginning, things can go wrong and quickly. If the expectations have been documented, this can help keep everyone on the same page.

  4. Professional growth is vital to professional satisfaction and career longevity. It is my belief that specialists want to continue to grow their skillset, to get excited and to pursue their interests. I believe that this keeps doctors happier and continuing to practice for many years. It is important to understand the avenues for growth when considering a new hospital and that it meets your needs.

  5. Compensation is important, but it is not the most important for many veterinarians when considering new oppotunities. Hospital culture, technical support and work/life balance are ranked above compensation in the evaluation process. Having said that, compensation packages need to be competitive, but the best package does not necessarily seal the deal.
